"Say (O Muhammad sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam): "Shall I take as a Wali (helper, protector, etc.) any other than Allaah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth? And it is He Who feeds but is not fed." Say: "Verily, I am commanded to be the first of those who submit themselves to Allaah (as Muslims)." And be not you (O Muhammad sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) of the Mushrikoon [polytheists, pagans, idolaters and disbelievers in the Oneness of Allaah]." [Al-An'aam (6):14]

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud:
The Prophet said, "Do not wish to be like anyone except in two cases. (The first is) A person, whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it righteously; (the second is) the one whom Allah has given wisdom (the Holy Qur'an) and he acts according to it and teaches it to others." (Fateh-al-Bari page 177 Vol. 1) [The Book of Knowledge Volume 1, Book 3, Hadeeth 73]
