[1] (111):1 Narrated Ibn 'Abbaas (radi-Allaahu 'anhu):
When the Verse: 'And warn your tribe (O Muhammad sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) of near kindred.' (26):214 was revealed, Allaah's Messenger (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) went out, and when he had ascended As-Safaa mountain, he shouted, 'Ya Sabaahaah!' * The people said, 'What is it?' Then they gathered around him, whereupon he said, 'Do you see? If I inform you that cavalrymen are proceeding up the side of this mountain, will you believe me?' They said, 'We have never heard you telling a lie.' Then he said, 'I am a plain warner to you of a coming severe punishment.' Aboo Lahab said, 'May you perish! You gathered us only for this reason?' Then Aboo Lahab went away. So (Soorah Al-Masad) 'Perish the hands of Aboo Lahab!' was revealed. (111):1. [Saheeh Al-Bukharee, Vol. 6, Hadeeth No. 495]
* "Ya Sabaahaah!" is an Arabic expression used when one appeals for help or draws the attention of others to some danger. |
|
[2] (111):4 "And his wife too, who carries wood." Mujaahid said, "Carries the wood" means that she used to slander (the Prophet sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) and goes about with calumnies. |
|
[3] (111):5 "In her neck is a twisted rope of palm fibre, i.e. the chain which is in the Fire (of Hell)." [Saheeh Al-Bukharee, Vol. 6, Ch. 356, P.469]
[Imaam Qurtubee says in the Tafseer of the (V. 17:45)]:
Narrated Sa'eed bin Jubaair (radi-Allaahu 'anhu):
"When Soorah No. 111 (Al-Masad) was revealed, the wife of Aboo Lahab came looking out for the Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) while Aboo Bakr (radi-Allaahu 'anhu) was sitting beside him. Aboo Bakr said to the Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) 'I wish if you get aside (or go away) as she is coming, to us, she may harm you'. The Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) said: 'There will be a screen set between me and her.' So she did not see him (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam). She said to Aboo Bakr: 'Your companion is saying poetry against me.' Aboo Bakr said: 'By Allaah he does not say peotry.' She said: 'Do you believe that.' Then she left. Aboo Bakr said, 'O Allaah's Messenger! She did not see you'. The Prophet (sal-Allaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) said: 'An angel was screening me from her.' " [This Hadeeth is quoted in Masnad Aboo Ya'la]
It is said that if the Verse (17):45 is recited by a real believer (of Islaamic Monotheism) he will be screened from a disbeliever. (Allaah knows best). (Tafseer Al-Qurtubee, Vol. 10, Page 269). |
